Open Position at the Association for Social Economics: Treasurer

The Association for Social Economics (ASE) seeks a new Treasurer who will be responsible for financial duties related to the operations of the Association. The position requires residency in the United States and good organizational skills. A background in maintaining accounts is desirable.

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Presenting a report of receipts and disbursements at the annual membership meetings.
  • Preparing the tax return for the ASE and responding to inquiries from the IRS.
  • Maintaining a permanent file of appropriate IRS forms. These items must be passed to the successor Treasurer.
  • Preparing the budget for the ASE (a preliminary budget for the following year is presented at the December Executive Council meeting; a final budget for the following year is presented at the annual membership meeting).
  • Supervising audits, maintaining the ASE’s non-profit status, and supporting the Association Director in seeking sales-tax exemption in states hosting events funded by the ASE.
  • Being a signatory on all accounts and assets of the ASE so that the Treasurer can assume responsibility for these in the event the Association Director is unable to perform their duties.
  • Serving on the Finance Committee.
  • Serving on committees to periodically negotiate journal contracts and on search committees for new journal editors.
  • Being a voting member of the Executive Council.

Compensation for the position is reimbursement for three nights at a standard conference hotel (or up to that rate if they choose to stay elsewhere) to attend the annual Allied Social Science Association conference. Reimbursement is for the cost of necessary inter- and intra-city travel and conference registration if full funding is not provided by their host institution; in addition, a flat payment of $250 to cover meals and incidentals during the conference is also received. The Treasurer also received an annual compensation of $3,000.

Interested individuals should upload a letter expressing interest, a CV, and the names of two references to the ASE Search Committee Chair, Belinda Román here. Review of applications will begin June 5, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled.
