The Association for Social Economics (ASE) is announcing a change in its editorial board for one of its journals, the Review of Social Economy (RoSE).
Following our recent Executive Council meeting and vote, ASE has moved forward with continuing its longstanding partnership with Taylor & Francis (T&F), a publisher that has been committed to heterodox economics books and journals for decades. RoSE publishes on a hybrid basis, meaning that it publishes both subscription and open access content. This means that it is an accessible publishing venue for all authors, whether or not they have access to open access funding.
The Executive Council considered in detail a proposal brought by the former editors of RoSE to move to a complete open access model with another press, a decision that would have major implications for ASE’s revenues and operations. After much investigation and discussion, ASE decided by a majority vote to renew its contract with T&F to ensure the continuation of its activities in line with the Association’s mission. Immediately after this decision and before the end of their contracts, the editors of RoSE resigned in unison. While the editors of RoSE insist that the journal is moving towards a model with author publishing fees (APFs), not subscriptions, this is not the case. The journal will continue to publish following its existing hybrid model as explained above.
We are grateful to all current and former editorial board members for their service to RoSE. Upcoming editorial board changes will build on their contributions while creating new opportunities for scholars from a wider range of geographical, methodological, and institutional backgrounds to participate in the journal’s future. Open calls for participation in editorial roles will be published on the ASE website, listserv, and other sites in the coming days.
ASE continues to support its mission of making knowledge and scholarly work in social economics available to everyone around the world. ASE provides free membership to scholars in least developed countries and this allows access to journal content for both RoSE and the Forum for Social Economics, also published by ASE.
